How to Move Rows in Excel

There are two major ways of moving rows in excel without affecting dependent cells, they are:

  1. Shift Key with drag and drop
  2. Using Insert cut cells

In today’s post we would take you through all you need to know about moving rows without affecting dependencies to that row. Let’s begin with the Shift key method.

Using the Shift Key to Move Rows

To move rows by using the shift key, just follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Select the row you want to move. In our example, let’s move the correct content on row 3 to row 6.

Move rows Step 1 1

Step 2: Press and hold the shift key whilst simultaneously moving your cursor to the edge of the selection. This action would trigger the move Icon which is a four directional arrow Icon

Move rows Step 2

Step 3: Click on the edge preferably where the move Icon is and drag into the new position. In our example we would drag it to just before row 7 since we want it to appear in row 6.

Move rows Step 3

Step 4: Release the mouse and then release the shift key. Your row should have moved to the new Position specified by you.

Move rows Step 4

Now you’re done. Easy right? Yes, very easy, but kindly note the following limitation:

  • You can only move contiguous rows (rows that are next to themselves, for example rows 4 and 5). Moving Non-Contiguous rows (Rows that are separated by another row, for example rows 4 and 6 is impossible with this method.

Using Insert Cut Cells to Move Rows

Using insert cut cells is another quick way of moving rows in excel. All you need to do is to- follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Select the row you want to move. In our example, we would still maintain movement for current row 3 to row 6.

Move rows Step 1 1

Step 2: Right click and select Cut or use the keyboard shortcut: CTRL + X

Move rows Step 5

Step 3: Navigate to the new position you want to move it to

Move rows Step 5 1

Step 4: Right click and click Insert Cut cells

Move Rows Step 6 2

Result: Excel moves the information on row 3 to its new position on row 6 without affecting any dependent cells or formula
